Resignation vs Termination

Resignation means you choose to leave. Termination means the employer ends the job. The label can affect unemployment claims, references, and HR records—details vary by state and facts.

Practical difference

If you resign, you usually control the notice and narrative. If you are terminated, the employer sets the end date and reason code in their system.

Gray areas

Being told to resign “or be fired,” walkouts, or constructive discharge situations are fact-specific. Get qualified advice if the stakes are high.

What to put in writing

If you are resigning, say so clearly with a last day. If you disagree with how an exit is labeled, ask HR for the reason in writing and keep copies.
