Should You CC HR on a Resignation Email?
CC’ing HR creates a shared record. The courteous default in many US workplaces is: tell your manager first, then email them and CC HR (or follow the handbook).
When CC’ing HR helps
Your handbook requires it; you need benefits or final-pay questions on record; your manager is unavailable; or you want a timestamped copy beyond one inbox.
When to wait
If you have not spoken to your manager yet and the relationship allows a live conversation, talk first, then send the email. Surprising a supportive manager via a mass CC can create unnecessary friction.
How to write it
Use a clear subject with “Resignation,” state your last day, thank briefly, and offer a handover. Do not air grievances in the CC thread.
